Jason & Lucia: GTA 6's Story So Far, Explained

Grand Theft Auto VI is built around two people. Rockstar has been careful about how much it reveals, but between the official synopsis, the character profiles on its site and the trailers, the setup is clear — and it's a relationship story as much as a crime story.

The official synopsis

Rockstar's description, shared with Trailer 2 and on the official site: "Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them. But when an easy score goes wrong, they find themselves on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, in the middle of a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida — forced to rely on each other more than ever if they want to make it out alive."

Jason

Jason Duval grew up around grifters and crooks. After a stint in the Army trying to shake off his troubled teens, he ended up in the Keys doing what he knows best — working for local drug runners. Rockstar's line on him: "It might be time to try something new."

He lives rent-free at one of Brian Heder's properties in exchange for help with local shakedowns, and his friend Cal Hampton works with Brian too. As for Lucia: meeting her "could be the best or worst thing to ever happen to him."

Lucia

Lucia Caminos learned to fight as soon as she could walk, and "life has been coming at her swinging ever since." Fighting for her family landed her in the Leonida Penitentiary; sheer luck got her out. Now it's "only smart moves from here."

Her motivation is specific: the good life her mom has dreamed of since their days in Liberty City — the series' New York stand-in — and she's prepared to take matters into her own hands. Rockstar's profile ends on the line that sets up the whole game: "A life with Jason could be her way out."

What the trailers show

• Trailer 1 (December 2023) began with Lucia in prison and ended with the pair, bandanas up and pistols out, about to hold up a store together.
• Trailer 2 (May 2025) put both of them front and center, and Rockstar says it was "captured entirely in-game from a PlayStation 5, comprised of equal parts gameplay and cutscenes."
• The 27-minute Extended Look (August 2026) is Rockstar's longest look at the game so far, "captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5."

What Rockstar hasn't said yet

Plenty is still unconfirmed: how switching between Jason and Lucia works, how missions split between them, and how the conspiracy plays out. Rockstar has said GTA VI is "a single player experience" — so whatever the answers are, they're about the story mode.
