GTA 6 Pre-Load Guide: Be Playing the Second It Unlocks

Pre-loading means your console downloads GTA VI before launch, then unlocks it the moment it's released — no waiting on a huge download while everyone else is already in Vice City. Here's exactly how it works for GTA VI, with the settings to check on PS5 and Xbox.

When pre-loading starts

Rockstar Support confirms pre-loading begins at midnight local time on November 12, 2026 for digital versions — the PlayStation Store lists it as a "7-Day Pre-load." Rockstar's pre-order announcement put it simply: players who pre-order digital versions "will be able to begin pre-loading on November 12."

If you bought a physical copy

GTA VI's physical version doesn't come with a disc — it's a download code in a box, Standard Edition only. Rockstar says physical copies will be available from November 12 specifically "to support pre-loading," so redeem your code as soon as you have it and the download starts like any digital pre-order.

One catch: PlayStation codes are locked to your account's region, according to Rockstar Support. Xbox codes aren't.

How much space you'll need

Rockstar hasn't published a download size, and the placeholder sizes on store listings aren't the real thing. For scale, Rockstar's last new game, Red Dead Redemption 2, needed 99 GB on PS4 (plus another 50 GB free during a digital install) and 107 GB on Xbox One. Clear plenty of space now rather than on launch night — we'll update this guide with the official size the moment it's listed.

PS5 settings to check

• Settings → Saved Data and Game/App Settings → Automatic Updates: turn on Auto-Download and Auto-Install in Rest Mode.
• Settings → System → Power Saving → Features Available in Rest Mode: turn on Stay Connected to the Internet.
• For GTA VI itself, open it in your Game Library and select the countdown timer — the auto-download box should be ticked.
• Leave the console in rest mode rather than fully off from November 12, so the download can run.

Xbox Series X|S settings to check

• Settings → System → Updates: turn on "Keep my games & apps up-to-date."
• Settings → General → Power options: Microsoft says both Sleep and Shutdown (energy saving) keep games updating automatically. Sleep also lets you start downloads remotely from the Xbox app and boots faster.

Launch-night plan

• Confirm your unlock time — store listings release GTA VI at midnight local time in each region; the US and Canada use midnight Eastern, which is 9 p.m. Pacific on November 18. Our release-time tool shows yours.
